Belgium releases humanitarian emergency aid for Ukraine
Deputy Prime Minister Alexander De Croo releases two million euros in humanitarian emergency aid for Ukraine. In Ukraine, 1.5 million people have fled the ongoing conflict in the eastern part of the country. The emergency aid will allow the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to assist the affected population by providing them with provisional shelter, food, medicines and water.
Alexander De Croo: "The humanitarian situation in Ukraine continues to deteriorate. More than 1.5 million people have fled the area occupied by the rebels in the East. They lack medicines, tuberculosis is on the rise, there are chronic shortages of electricity and potable water. The severe winter has only made the situation worse. Due to the absence of pension payments, many seniors are not able to provide for their daily needs anymore. "
"Since the Balkan wars of the 90s, Europe has not known any greater humanitarian crisis. As European countries, we have to take our responsibility regarding the humanitarian crisis taking place at the border of the European Union. Together, we are the main source of humanitarian assistance to the victims of this crisis."
